On Sunday, May 7th, 2023, while most of College Park was still asleep, a brave group of Club Runners awoke before 5 am to make the trek over to Frederick, Maryland for the Frederick Half Marathon. A cool, sunny morning made it a great day for some big PRs and great performances from the club.
On the Men’s side, we were led by Cameron Nasseri in 1:21:58 for 14th overall. In the men’s 20 and under division, Maryland Club Running went 1-2-3, led by Benno Wien in 1:26:05. Caleb Holland followed behind in 1:27:46, however he did not meet his goal of running a “sub Over the Hedge (2006) Running time”. Lucas “Cap” LaBuff rounded out the top 3 in 1:28:34. Liam Foley got dusted by a 14 year old, and came in 5th for the age group in 1:29:14.

For Men’s 20-24, we had Jorge Argueta in 1:26:15 in 4th for the division, followed by Andrew “not washed” Cullen in 5th with 1:26:31 and Hadi Alzayer in 1:31:56. Sam “only got 2 hours of sleep last night” Guzzone ran 1:34:02. Sam was accompanied by Tim “only got 3 hours of sleep” Chu for the first 6 miles until Tim took a porta potty break and had a lot of ground to make up to eventually catch back up to him in 1:35:32. They were then followed by Adam Cullen in 1:40:09, Al Dimont in 1:45:41, and Jimmy Matherly in 1:47:15.

The women’s side was led by Emily Jiang in 1:41:23 for 2nd in Women’s 20-24 (only second to Strava Legend, Anna Staats), closely followed by Lillian Hsu in 1:41:34, then by Kayleigh McNeill in 1:47:22 (tragically outkicked by Jimmy), Sarah Dubsky in 1:54:26, Fatima Younis in 1:58:23, Catherine Rodriguez in 2:03:28, and Maggie Krieg in 2:14:08.
After the race, club runners also had the opportunity to flex on some Marine Recruiters with their pull up challenge. Those who did not fear getting recruited into the Marines dropped some solid pull up performances:

Jimmy Matherly – 8
Hadi Alzayer – 8
Benno Wien – 12
Sarah Dubsky – 10
John Schmidt – 21
A special thank you to Brooke Walz for photos and our drivers, especially John Schmidt and Tim Caryl for getting us to the meet.
