We’re bringing back meet recaps (maybe).
What better way to end Spring Break than with a fun and competitive club meet. Those who competed at the Dashing Dukes Invite last year surely appreciated the significantly better weather this year. Just the drive down to JMU brings a lot of excitement from the views of Blue Ridge Mountains.
The meet was off to great start for the Terps in the 5000m. Vice President Lillian Hsu took 2nd place, and Apparel Coordinator Eamon Plante got the win in tactical sit and kick (2/2 on wins at JMU).
Next it was time for the sprinters to shine. In the 100m, Kaylyn Miller finished 2nd and Uzoma Nwosu finished 3rd. Daniel Lu also scored, finishing 5th.
In the 800m, Sadou Sow continued his winning debut club season, leading the race the entire way. Behind him, Alberto Covaliu and Sohan Ganatra scored with a neck and neck finish for 4th and 5th.
If you’re a fan of club records, you know that the 1600m record doesn’t get much of a chance to be contested since very few collegiate meets run the 1600m. Our club members knew this and came into the meet with their sights on the record. On the women’s side, Anna Weiksner and Brooke Walz knew the record set by Simone Evans last year was in reach. The race went out well under record pace, and after the first lap, Anna took off, putting a big gap on the field. In the end, both Anna and Brooke went under the old record 5:59. Anna won the heat in a new club record of 5:42.7, and finished 2nd overall as someone won the race with a fast time from the first heat. Brooke finished 5th, both raking in more team points for Maryland.
On the men’s side, Max Worley looked to get a win after finishing in a close second at this race last year. The five year old record held by Colin Sybing was also in reach. Max took the race out hard and held a considerable lead through most of the race. In the last 200 meters, competition started to gain slightly, but there was no match for Max’s long, fast stride, finishing with the win and a club record of 4:27.96. John Schmidt also pulled in more points in his second events of the day, finishing 5th.
In the 200m, we had a deep showing, led by John Ihejurobi bringing in another win for the Terps. Behind him, Uzoma Nwosu, Kalabe Arefeayne, and Sadou Sow brought in more team points. Sofia Grossman and Morgan Bailey also scored points with their 4th and 5th place finishes.
In the 400m, Sadou scored yet again in his 3rd event of the day, finishing 2nd and Molly Wilson finished first on the women’s side.
Getting to the end of the meet, the Men’s 4×4 brought in a comfortable win with a 10 second lead.
Those are some great performances, and I haven’t even gotten to the field events yet!
In the shot put, Sofia Grossman continued to show that she can really do it all at every meet, by breaking her own club record for the win in 33′ 10.5″. Savannah Sitler also scored points with a 5th place finish.
In the long jump, we had ANOTHER club record. Morgan Bailey jumped 15′ 3″ for the win. For the men, Kalabe Arefenaye finished 3rd.
With all these top finishes, we knew both teams would be in contention for a good placing. Both the Mens and Womens finished 2nd in the team score and took home a nice golden bucket.
